Damage to Asphalt Driveways and Sidewalks: Common Causes

Asphalt paving is highly durable; that’s why it’s often used for driveways, roadways and parking lots. However, much like other building materials, it can get damaged when it’s constantly exposed to certain elements.

For instance, sunlight can be damaging to asphalt pavement. You can’t really do anything about its level of exposure to the sun, but you can apply a sealcoating to protect it from ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Here are some of the other common causes of damage to asphalt driveways and sidewalks.

Surface Water

Standing water can weaken the asphalt surface, and this usually causes cracks to expand. Aside from that, it encourages the formation of potholes, too. Regular reapplication of sealcoating will have to be done to keep surface water out and prevent such problems.

Tree Roots

Tree roots can extend 50 to 75 feet, often reaching the ground underneath the pavement. In this case, tree roots would likely cause cracks, bumps and heaving because they’re seeking out water and trying to grow.

Fuel and Oil

Over time, fuel and oil can penetrate the asphalt surface and break up its aggregates. This causes the pavement to crumble and for depressions to form. You can avoid this problem by regularly checking your vehicle and keeping an eye on vehicle fluid buildup on your asphalt.

Heavy Trucks and Vehicles

The weight of heavy vehicles can increase rutting and pavement deterioration, especially along the wheel paths. Working with a qualified and experienced contractor can help you ensure an efficient design for your driveway or parking lot. This can improve the lifespan and durability of your asphalt surface.
